O'Bannon Woods State Park Campground - Corydon, Indiana

O'Bannon Woods State Park Campground, formerly known as Wyandotte Caves, is a family friendly campground located in Corydon, Indiana. It offers the perfect camping location for those who want to get close to nature while still be close to the Interstate, stores, gas stations, and restaurants.

On the weekends the campground is busy but not overly crowded, and during the week there are very few visitors to the campground. So if you are a family that likes to stay at a campground that is not crowded than O'Bannon Woods is a great place for you.

All of the sites at O'Bannon Woods are gravel or concrete, and mostly wooded. Some of the campsites are on the small side, but there are some very nice sized sites available. The staff at the gatehouse will let you drive through to pick a spot if you ask, if you do not ask they will just assign you a campsite. Of course if you are reserving your campsite online, you can designate which campsite that you want if it is available.

The campground offers sites with electrical hookups but water hookups are not available.  Communal water faucets are scattered around the campground though. A big downside for us, but if you have holding tanks on your camper it is manageable. Another downside to the campground is that there is only one playground, which is at the front of the campground. If you are at the back of the campground it is a large walk, and not easy to get to. However the bath houses are clean and well kept.

Outside of the campground in the state park visitors will find a nature center that offers rooms with a one way mirror to view birds and other wildlife, and has a variety of snakes and fish for visitors to view.

There is also a Pioneer Village to walk through and explore. There are times when the village is staffed but most of the time the buildings are locked up and visitors can not access the inside.

My children enjoyed climbing the stairs to the top of the Wyandotte Fire Tower where you can enjoy spectacular views of the park.

But of course their favorite part of the entire park is the swimming pool, which offers a children's pool with zero depth entry, sprayers, and all kinds of fun activities to keep kids busy. For the older kids and adults there is a pool that features two body slides.

Here's what you need to know to make the best of your trip:

• When you enter the park you must pay the Entrance fee, this is a one time fee as the rest of the time you will get in and out of the gate at no charge with your camping permit. The fee is $5 for Indiana residents and $7 for out of state visitors.
• Campsite rates are $17.34 Sunday through Wednesday for electric sites, $25.50 Thursday through Saturday, and $38.76 on holidays.
• Admission to the pool is $2 per person per day or you can purchase a punch card for $35 that is good for 25 admissions.
• O'Bannon Woods State park Campground is pet friendly.

We enjoyed our stay at O'Bannon Woods but stayed a few nights on the weekend and a few weekday nights.  The campground is pretty much deserted during the week.  The campground hosts are there, a few campers are around but the place is pretty much empty.  So if you are looking for a week full of planned activities this isn't the place to go.  My kids enjoyed the pool, although it was crowded on Sunday.  We will visit here again.
